Can a 30 year old water maple tree survive after being hit by a pick-up truck at 45 mph?

Bark is missing in a 2′ high section near the base of the tree. The oil and fluids from the vehicle leaked into the ground at the base of the tree.

since so much bark is missing it will probably die. the bark helps protect against insect damage

Get some pruning sealant to seal the area where the bark is missing; as long as the tree is not girdled, it has a chance. Good luck!

Call a Nursery (or several). We had a large Oak tree hit and the chunk of bark knocked off was extremely large. we used some liquid (recommended by a nursery) and the tree grew beautifully and the bark closed up completely. The spot of lost bark was about 24 in diameter.

The tree is probably a lot better off than the pickup. As long as the tree wasn’t girdled the bald spot will callus over even without an application of pruning seal. And remember that the roots of a maple spread for many feet out and down. Lots of other roots there to gather the needed nutrients. The fluids from the pickup certainly won’t be good for it but I am pretty confident your tree will live.
